As the coffin was carried out of the church, Diane walked alongside it. She seemed to not want to let her daughter go. They had been through so much together, they had gone so far together. Diane was her daughter’s business partner, she was her daughter’s closest confidante, and she was her daughter’s constant travelling companion — except on two trips: the one from Abaco Island, and the trip her daughter was now about to take.
Diane placed her left hand on her daughter’s coffin, and kept it there all the way up to the church doors. Then she began singing ‘One In A Million’. Some of the other mourners joined in.
After the private event, fans stood by reverently and watched while Aaliyah’s casket was loaded into a waiting Hearse. Then, like something out of a fairy tale, twenty two doves were released into the air, one for every year of the singer’s short life. The first one was released by Diane who then broke down in tears.
Not long afterwards, rain began to fall.
